American Orchid Society

Delray Beach

The main building is situated to capitalize on the site’s natural beauty and to create dramatic views of the 3½ acres of gardens and water features from multiple levels. The building’s significant presence and commanding entry welcomes visitors to the International Headquarters of the American Orchid Society. The facilities serve multiple functions: offering gardens where visitors can appreciate the beauty of orchids; an educational center where classes are offered on understanding the uses of orchids and their need for conservation; offices for the society and areas for community functions.

The Mediterranean style of the two-story main building centers on a cupola that brings natural light into the center of the space where the garden tour experience begins. Bringing nature into the building was the focus of the design, as evidenced by the lobby of the building, which calls to mind a forest canopy. The main building also serves as the center hub for the Society offices and is a natural gathering area. The space is multi-functional and can be used for a variety of activities to serve the needs of the Society (i.e., exhibits, gallery, displays, receptions, etc.). The facility also provides offices, meeting facilities and a warehouse.

The back patio area is elevated to provide a panoramic view of the rapidly evolving botanical gardens, offering a spectacular water wall, fountains, reflection pool and countless species of native and exotic flora. It is a place where people can linger, a place where beauty abounds. It is one of the first stopping points where people can enjoy the vista and then decide which direction, or path, they want to explore on their tour. As funds become available, future plans include the addition of the museum, auditorium and library. In 2004, a working greenhouse with an interior display garden were completed.
