This multi-award winning elementary school was Song + Associates’ original Elementary School Prototype for the School District of Palm Beach County and was re-used for Equestrian Trails Elementary School and most recently, Elbridge Gale Elementary School.
The street-front/urban school neighborhood development concept for this design/build project emphasizes the elements of the surrounding New Haven residences located at the heart of a new traditional neighborhood. Familiar architectural elements blend the new school into the community and also help elementary students adjust and accept their learning environment as an extension of their homes. The compact design preserves the natural beauty of the wooded site and provides natural surveillance by proximity. Careful attention has been given to sight lines, functional flow and
circulation to allow for maximum monitoring of the site and for the ultimate safety of the students. Critical areas addressed in the design include bus/service areas, parent drop-off and bike and pedestrian circulation. Sense of space has been incorporated at the site entrances for parents to gather and wait for children. Other areas for gathering and interaction include the amphitheater area located at the center of the courtyard, which is an extension of the indoor stage by utilizing a 27-foot O.H. door outside the cafeteria.
