Independence Middle School

Jupiter, FL

Located in the Abacoa Development, a “New Urbanism Neighborhood Development,” the design is a re-use of the multi award winning prototype developed for Odyssey Middle School in Boynton Beach, Florida. The prototype design was site adapted to fit into the new neighborhood using a Mediterranean Revival design style emphasizing the architectural elements of the surrounding neighborhood. While the architectural style blends with the neighborhood, it also creates a visually striking impact that emphasizes the importance of the facility within the community. The design preserves the natural beauty of the wooded site while allowing for features that enhance school safety and security. Careful attention has been given to sight lines, functional flow and circulation to allow for maximum monitoring of the campus to provide for the ultimate safety of the students and staff.

Educational flexibility is provided in the modular design focusing on technology and the positive interaction between students and staff. At the heart of the school are the common areas in an open layout that provides for gathering and interaction in a supervised environment. The compact design utilizes varied heights in the structures to capitalize on the volume of space and natural light. Visually and spatially, the curved exterior wall design and secured courtyard establishes the character and identity of the building. From a security standpoint, these curved visual site lines help provide a safer environment for the students and staff since there are no hiding places and visual supervision is maximized. To minimize security risks, administrators and teachers can visually monitor from the administration area or the teachers’ planning area.
