The 120,700 SF Everglades Elementary School was designed for 960 students, in order to relieve overcrowding at other elementary schools, Song + Associates used a certified LEED Gold award-winning prototype design that included polished concrete floors instead of vinyl flooring for cost and maintenance efficiency, compact fluorescent bulbs and fixture motion sensors to reduce lighting costs, interactive displays to show how much energy the school was consuming, rainwater use for landscape irrigation, low-e glass to reduce heat gain, a passive solar control device, storage and collection of recyclable materials, high SRI Value roofing system for reducing heat island effect, a native preserve area, designated low emitting and fuel efficient vehicle and carpool parking, occupancy sensors & automatic shut-off controls to reduce sky glow, over 21% energy cost saving by using high performance mechanical and electrical equipment, use of refrigerants and equipment that minimizes compounds that contribute to ozone depletion, and use interior finishes with low to no V.O.C.s.
